Beeswax food wrap: Everything you should know
Packing, unpacking and repackaging our meals, leftovers and foodstuffs is part of our daily life. The use of single-use plastic packaging is not only bad for the environment, it is also bad for our health. Reducing our ecological footprint on Earth and moving towards a healthier and more eco-responsible life is a wish shared by a growing majority. This constantly increasing awareness is causing a major change in our choice to use alternative packaging for our food: green, smart and zero waste. The bee wrap thus eliminates the need for stretch food cellophane, baking paper and aluminum rolls. The ecological and zero waste packaging that is the beeswax food wrap therefore avoids changing your habits and preserving your food better, but above all, doing so in an ecological way.
With what is a beeswax wrap made ?
The bee wrap is generally made of 4 elements / ingredients:
These four elements together have natural bactericidal properties. This allows the bee wrap to prolong the freshness of your food and prevent bacteria from growing too quickly. In addition, the organic cotton fabric sheet is breathable and combined with beeswax, which allows air to pass through, allowing optimal ventilation. It allows meals to maintain an optimal level of humidity and prevents the proliferation of mold.

Which beeswax wrap should I choose ?
The choice for packaging or transporting our culinary preparations in a simple and natural way is between a beeswax wrap coated with beeswax or its vegan version which is initially provided with vegetable wax. Beyond that, the type of pack and their design will depend on the size of your family and the patterns on the fabrics you want.
Both versions, vegan or not, have huge advantages over disposable and non-ecological packaging. They are washable, durable, reusable, without toxic components, compostable and therefore ecological and zero waste! The only difference is the type of wax between the two. As beeswax is produced by our foraging bee friends, making it not Vegan. A soy-based vegetable wax is therefore used.
All the beewraps on Takaterra are made in a responsible and ecological way. The choice of size or pack depends on your daily life. To give a few examples:
- You are curious and want to try it out : Take a single food wrap sheet to try. If it suits you, opt for a pack with 3 different sizes of bee wraps. It should be enough for your daily life.
- You live alone or as a couple : Choose a pack with 3 different sheet sizes or a pack with 2 extra large sheets. You can cut them with a pair of scissors to fit your daily need and customfit the size of your bowls and jars.
- You are a couple and have at least one child: The family pack with 5 sheets of food wraps will meet your needs. You can opt for an additional pack with 3 sheets just in case, but it shouldn't be necessary.
- It's just to take your sandwich everywhere: Do you make your baguette sandwich on a regular basis? Take the long version dedicated to baguette. You will be done with disposable packaging!
How to use a Bee Wrap?
Its use is simple, the advantage of the wrap is that it adapts to all forms of fruits and vegetables, bowls or dishes. You can easily use beeswax food wrap to coat bits of fruit, cheese or pies. Of course, covering bowls or casseroles, taking sandwiches to work, travel or picnic is just as easy. Thanks to its flexibility and malleability, a bee wrap will conform to the shape of your food, regardless of its size or shape, and will not let any food escape. The beeswax food wrap is thermoformable and flexible. The heat from your hands will activate the wax and cause the fabric to stick gently but firmly to the shape by bending, like an adhesive. It can keep dishes both cool in the fridge or lying outside. Be careful to place it on containers or food at cold or room temperature. If you put it on something hot, the wax will melt and it won't be effective.
After use, removing it is immediate and all it takes is a quick rinse under lukewarm water and the natural reusable packaging is immediately ready to be reused. Find out here how to properly clean a bee wrap.
